Health
and Safety
For
Elim, “cleanliness is next to holiness.” This is not just a slogan for us, but
we literally mean it. We take utmost care for the safety of the children
committed to our care and nurture. Therefore, we take special initiative to
keep the premises clean and safe. Our school is closed on Saturdays mainly to
do the weekly thorough cleaning of the premises and the facilities. All our
facilities are neatly arranged and properly maintained. School has strict
measures to keep up good hygiene of the place.
Following are some of those
measures:
(a)
Boys
and girls have separate restrooms with multiple WCs and bathing space with hot
water facility.
(b)
Children
have easy access to soap for washing their hands after using the toilet.
(c)
Single
use disposable tissues are provided for children to wipe their hands. Children
are also encouraged to bring their own hand towel to school.
(d)
All
children are trained to observe proper and regular hand-washing, especially
after visiting the toilet. Each helping staff is assigned with few children to
assist them in this matter.
(e)
Toys
are washed regularly and put under the sun to dry. We do not let the children
play with stuffed toys as these are difficult to clean when soiled.
(g)
Children
are unwell will be asked to go home.
(h)
Children
who are sick must not be sent to school.
(i)
Each
child is assigned with a low level cot, linen, and pillow. (Parents are asked
to provide the linen, and towel).
Dealing with
Emergency Situation
(a)
Our
teachers and support staff are trained to deal with emergency situations,
especially on how to perform CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) on an infant
or child on rescue breathing; and how to give First Aid to a chocking infant or
child. We have demonstration videos of these and other First Aid measures and
we screen to the Staff through our LCD Projector during their compulsory basic
training sessions to let the Staff know what to do during emergency situations.
(b)
We
also let the children watch these videos when they first enroll to our school
so that they would know what to do in emergency situations and should not
panic. During the first few days of their enrollment, children are required to
go through a series of instructions regarding the basic steps they need to take
to keep themselves clean and protected, and to prevent any unforeseen incident
while they are on our premises or even in their life.
(c)
Parents
are requested not to send any food items, as snacks or meals, that would chock
the children, such as, banana, fish or meat balls, chocolate balls, etc.
(d)
The
school is equipped with a well packed and maintained First Aid Box for
emergency medical need.
(e)
The
building is fixed with two fire extinguishers, one next to the kitchen and
another in front of the office.
(f)
The
building is equipped with an alarm system and in any emergency situation, the
alarm would sound and the responsible people would get into action immediately.
(g)
The
building has multiple entry and exit points.
(h)
For
any emergency medical attention other than First Aid Box, the school has a
tie-up with Karunalayam Hospital, Carmelaram.
(i)
For
sleeping purpose, the school uses only low level single cots which have been
specially designed by the school, and made by our carpenter for this purpose.
Individual Health
Measures
To
ensure the highest quality of care for children attending the School, it is
essential that parents inform the staff of any health related problems upon
enrolment.
Parents
will be asked to fill out an ‘Individual Health Plan’ form which outlines the
medical history, medical conditions, management plan, doctor’s contact details
and a photo of the child. Furthermore, if a child has been diagnosed with
asthma or anaphylaxis, parents are asked to fill out separate action management
plans.
Allergies
or chronic conditions which your child has should be discussed with the school
Principal or Supervisor so that they are familiar with how they should attend
to your child if necessary.
Children
who have been diagnosed with autism, developmental delays etc, may be eligible
for specialized care within the school.
Illness and
Infectious Diseases
Should
your child become ill whilst at the School you will be notified and asked to
collect your child immediately. It is important that you collect your child
promptly to minimize your child’s discomfort and to reduce the possibility of
cross-infection with other attending children.
Your
child may return to the School providing that he/she is not contagious and is
not undergoing the first two days of anti-biotic treatment.
Children
suffering from infectious diseases (eg diarrhea, measles, mumps, chickenpox,
etc) or if vomiting must be excluded from the service of the School for a
period of time until the child is fully recovered. If the child is diagnosed as
having an infectious disease, it is your responsibility to inform the School
immediately.
